Country Heat: a simple, fun cardio dance workout with fool-proof nutrition tools

Here is my 30 day Country Heat transformation!! I found myself really enjoying the dances (especially those on disc 2) despite not being very coordinated or really a country music listener. Every day the 30 minutes flew by with constant movement and fun songs.

I love Autumn's training and teaching style and really loved the move breakdowns. This was a walk-through speed without the music so you weren't trying to figure out the moves DURING the workout itself.

I did not miss a workout OR a Shakeology, and was more mindful of my portions, waited a while before wanting 2nds or dessert (and almost all of the time ended up not being hungry enough after waiting), and really felt some changes in my core/waist.

I have gained weight this year due to removing my Mirena in the spring (sorry if that's TMI for you, but I'm being honest) and have struggled seeing that number on the scale increase EVEN THOUGH I know that it's just a number. Doing this low impact cardio workout gave me the results I was hoping for.

This picture may "only" show a 2 pound weight loss but to me it feels like a lot more. I feel shrunken, not starved. Does that even make sense?? lol. I feel so much leaner in my entire torso, and even see more muscle tone in my legs. To achieve that without using weights or killing my hips, knees, and back is amazing.

The picture here also shows more than my stats. It shows a 30 day commitment: to myself, and to my challengers. I don't invite people to my accountability groups to sell them something and leave them to fend for themselves. This stuff changed my LIFE- why wouldn't I want to share my experience with others?! I am there every single day, doing the same things that I ask my challengers to. We've formed a support system and are there for each other every single day.

ANYONE can benefit from improving their nutrition, and the tools in this program make these changes with no guesswork or confusion. I believe this fitness program is the MOST ACCESSIBLE to anyone, regardless of injury or current fitness level. What do YOU have to lose by giving it a try? If this looks fun to you, please reach out to me.

Squashing Some Misconceptions about At-Home Workouts

I titled this post today “Squashing Some Misconceptions” because I think that unless you go out and you learn the information about what it is I do you may have some misconceptions about it, especially about the fitness programs: that they may be super hard and you can't do it, or you don't have the time, or the space. I just want to let you know where I did my workout this morning. I'm at my in-laws house and all you need is like an L-shaped space: that's it. All you need to do is be able to take a few steps up and a few steps to the side. For the dancing workout programs like Country Heat and Cize, an L-shape is all you need. For most of these workout programs you just need to be able to have that bubble around you: if you can put your arms out and twirl in a circle without hitting anything that's all the space you need to workout at home. You don't need fancy equipment, either. Country Heat in particular requires no equipment at all, just my body, and I'm sweating like you wouldn’t believe. So that’s the first misconception: how much space you need.

The second misconception about working out at home is that you need a ton of time: these workouts are 30 minutes long. That’s not a ton of time in the grand scheme of your day, especially given that in the morning it will really get your blood pumping, digestive system moving, and give you energy. You probably won’t even need your coffee! You can even have the news on in the background and mute the workout on your computer so that you can do the news and your workout at the same time.

I am two-and-a-half years into my fitness journey, so I have done extreme programs. There are programs, like Country Heat, that are so accessible for anybody. Country Heat has been making me sore: squats and stuff like that are built into the moves. It's very deceptive because you think it's easy just because it's simple. But because it's simple everyone can do it, if you're willing to try. You don't have to get all the way down in your squats or jump huge like some of the people; as long as you're moving and having fun that's all that matters. There's no equipment, just your body. You’re not just standing there and doing squats, push-ups, or burpees; you're just moving and following along to the music and it's so much fun.

I can tell you that I have felt a world of difference in my midsection from this program. I have been more mindful of what I have been eating, I haven't been 100% on the eating plan because let's just face it: I don't like vegetables but I fit them in. I’ve also been more mindful of what I eat if we eat out. For example, last night we drove through McDonald's because we were traveling during dinner time and instead of a double quarter pounder with cheese and chocolate chip frappe that I may have had a couple months ago, Corey and I split the two cheeseburger meal, shared the fries, and I just had water to drink. I know that’s not the same as grilling some salmon with steamed asparagus and olive oil and sweet potatoes on the side…let’s be real, its not. But of the choices I had available, I made a good one. I didn't starve myself and skip dinner I just had a smarter portion of what was available.

I have lost some weight, I have lost or gained some definition in my midsection which is awesome and if dancing around in my living room for 30 minutes a day can give me a few pounds shred, a few inches lost, and some confidence to rock some new yoga pants…that's a win in my book and that's really what it's all about. This health and fitness journey is about giving you the confidence to know that you're doing something that is better for your body. When you find yourself not craving junk anymore and you find yourself having an apple with your daughter instead of grabbing your secret stash of M&M’s (because let's really be real, most moms have a secret stash to keep away from their kids so they don't have to share), you know you’re on the right track.

I bought the program because my friends were doing it, so why don't you let some positive peer pressure change your life, too? Really!! My friend was doing fitness programs three years ago and I could have just ignored her, unfollowed her, or got mad that she kept inviting me but instead I was like “You know what? You're my friend; you have my best interest at heart and if you think that I can do this then I'm going to try.”

And now I'm so glad that I did! So I'm extending an invitation to you! Let me exert some positive peer pressure on you: you need to try a program- I’ll help find one that is the perfect match for you. You need to try it, because what do you have to lose? If half an hour can make a day can make you a healthier person, a happier person, a more confident person, a more patient person…then why haven't you tried it yet?! You know I've been asking you to try it, so let's put the doubt, fear, and excuses away and let me help you. I will be there everyday with you. I promise that if you put in the work, I will not let you fail. Please reach out if you are ready to take that step today!

TGIF! Thinking ahead and preparing for Friday night temptations

I know it's Friday evening right now and maybe you're thinking about going out to eat, football games or unwinding after a long week. What you're probably NOT thinking about is making sure you get your workout in!
The great thing is...my challengers THOUGHT AHEAD! They drank their Shakeology to keep cravings in check for Friday night happy hour. They logged their workouts early before work and before excuses could set in.
I am so proud of each person in my group that is putting in the hard work to improve their health. It's so much easier to do when you know you're not alone. That's why I love hosting private accountability groups.
Keep it up, everyone! 1 week left in the month!

Grow It, Try It, Like It!

My husband went to a health and nutrition education conference a while back and came home with a form from Team Nutrition USDA with all sorts of educational nutrition resources from grades preschool on up through middle school.
Today I got a box of the "Grow it, Try it, Like it!" preschool curriculum in the mail that he ordered for me. It's awesome and my inner teaching nerd is drooling over these things as Addie sleeps nearby.
It has sight word booklets and a different unit for 6 different fruits and vegetables that features activities like hands on stuff, eating and recipes, learning how they grow (and even planting your own), stories and songs, physical education activities, and even take home materials for the teachers to send home with kids.
I think it's a great curriculum and every school should be teaching about proper nutrition, getting in touch with growing your own food, and staying active. It would work great for homeschooling moms too!
If you'd like more information about this curriculum you can see here: http://www.fns.usda.gov/tn/grow-it-try-it-it

What is 22 Minute Hard Corps?

I always get really excited when i get a new workout program and stuff to go through in the mail so I thought it would be fun to go through the next workout program that Corey and I are going to be doing together and show you what's all included.

This is a brand new program from Tony Horton- it's called 22 Minute Hard Corps which means that every day's workout is only 22 minutes long. Beachbody has 30 minute workouts for 21 Day Fix; T25 is 25 minutes; 10 Minute Trainer from way back is 10 minutes a day, and now there's 22 Minute Hard Corps. It's based on military-style physical training. The first disc has be 3 cardio workouts and 2 core workouts, and a cold start workout if you need more time to warm up. Disc 2 has 3 Resistance workouts, the cold start, and a bonus workout from P90X3.

In the side folder there is a quick start and it gives you a letter from Tony, it tells you how to calculate your calories or your containers, the calendar (eight weeks with an optional final week). There are 6 workouts a week and you get Sunday off to meal prep. The final "Hell Week" challenge has 2-3 workouts a day. On the back of the calendar it shows all of the members of the military that were in the workouts for this program. Tony Horton has trained military members and goes to military bases all the time.

When you finish you send in your results you get a free challenge coin. I think you can collect coins from different military bases i think that's the basis of it doing that for this program instead of a free t-shirt.

22 Minute Hard Corps uses the portion control containers, so the meal planning booklet "Rations for Results" will show you how to figure out your containers for the day, the food lists, and 22 meal ideas. There is also an herb and spice compatibility index so it shows you all sorts of spices and tells you what food that pairs well with it. So if you are a big cinnamon fan for instance, it says you can have cinnamon with carrots, pumpkin, squash, sweet potatoes, apples, bananas, cranberries, pears, nuts, bread, chicken, and lamb. That is very cool.

The green container is for your veggies; purple for fruit; red for protein; yellow for carbs; blue for healthy fats and cheese; orange for seeds and dressings; teaspoons for oils and nut butters. They are dishwasher safe, microwave safe, and BPA-free.

Corey and I just started this program July 4th. I am really excited to see where this program takes us being super time limited this summer. Who doesn't have a super jam-packed summer schedule?! This would be so easy to fit into your day.

A friend of mine just posted her results and she lost eight pounds and seven inches in her eight weeks!

OH, and there is also a bonus work out if you order through a coach like me- otherwise you'd have to pay $20! It's called the Battle Buddy workout. I also bought the deluxe set of workouts for 22 Minute Hard Corps- Special Ops Cardio, Core, and Resistance- 3 different workouts that all use the neat PT sandbag from Beachbody.

Watch Addie and I unpack everything in this video to get a visual, as well as her side commentary. ;)

Country Line Dancing workout: Country Heat coming soon!!

$5 was just donated on my behalf to help fight the Canadian wildfires thanks to Beachbody. How?? All I did was log onto Beachbody on Demand to try a brand new workout from the upcoming program Country Heat.

If you think that face looks familiar, it is!! Autumn Calabrese created the 21 Day Fix and those revolutionary portion control containers, as well as Hammer & Chisel. Now she's back teaching country-inspired dances in a really easy to follow and fun format. I was sweating and had my heart rate up even though I still have 2 left feet. ðŸ’ƒ

If you'd like to try this workout for free today, comment below. Or if you'd like more information about the program before it releases in July, comment below as well!

2 years into my health, fitness, and weight loss journey with Beachbody

The first year of my fitness journey was AMAZING. I saw results immediately and all year long. My 2nd year was VERY different. If I didn't have the support of my accountability groups and education to give me a new mindset on RESULTS AND HEALTH, I would probably think that not losing any more weight or inches from year 1 to 2 would be a bad thing.
.
So many people see results and then QUIT without realizing that health is a journey, not a number on the scale or destination. Then they go back to their old habits and wonder why they gain the weight back. ðŸ¤” If you really want to be healthy, you've got to draw a line in the sand and say "ENOUGH" and never go back. That's what 2015 to 2016 was for me.
.
I STILL drink Shakeology daily, I STILL workout at home 5-7 days a week, I STILL use my portion control containers and meal plan and allow for moderation and indulgences, and that's why I am STILL down the same amount of weight and inches as I lost in the first year of my health and fitness journey. I found the secret to lasting results, and that's to LAST- just keep on keeping on!
.
If you want to see changes like this and feel the benefits of more energy, better digestion, clearer skin, less cravings, more confidence, more patience, better relationships, then are you ready for a commitment? I will do it WITH you and I WON'T QUIT on you. The deadline to join my June 6th accountability group is fast approaching.
.
Who's in? Comment below or message me to get started.

When your transformation has nothing to do with a number: a turning point in my transformation

#transformationtuesday

Here are my before and after pictures for Cize. I didn't lose/gain any pounds or inches in the 4 week program. That's why we also say to take pictures because they will show a different story than your numbers. But my pictures look really similar. To be honest, you can gain or lose a couple inches and pounds from a big bloaty cheat meal or a really good trip to the bathroom. (You know what I'm talking about! 🙊)

Did you see my before and after videos I posted though as I finished Cize? Now THERE was a difference! I gained coordination, had fun, and got sweaty. (Check out my YouTube playlist of Cize routine progressions here: bit.ly/kboecizevids)

I looked back at my weight tracker app and I've been steady with my weight for a year now! Even my body measurements have been pretty much the same. I could let this lack of a "transformation" bother me, but let's be realistic. I weigh 112 pounds and am 5 feet tall. I'm not going to lose much more weight or inches. It's just not there. I can tone up or gain muscle, sure.

But fitness and clean eating (with "cheats" in moderation) is my LIFE now. It's not another round of the 21 Day Fix or looking for a before/after picture from a particular program. It's EVERY DAY, IN AND OUT. And guess what? That's how the weight is going to stay off!!

I could get complacent and take time off, or eat out more, or buy junk at the store because it's easier, but those are the habits I left behind. That was my BEFORE. My AFTER is the life I'm living now, and the life I will continue to live.

If you'd like my help starting with your transformation pictures, I can do that. But more than that, I want to be there to see your before and after LIFESTYLE.

Sometimes our transformation can't be seen on a scale, measuring tape, or picture. Sometimes it happens inside of us. 💟

How I took back my health and joined my daughter on the playground

Playgrounds are supposed to be fun, but I used to see them as punishment. Why, you ask?
I had a bit of an a-ha moment at the playground today with Addison and needed to take a quick video. Please watch and share if you think this would resonate with anyone else in your life.

What I've lost in 1 year with Beachbody, and what I've gained

**I started this post and then it got lost...but better late than never
to show my 1 year transformation story with Beachbody!**

1 year ago Monday I started the 21 Day Fix with my husband- officially kicking off our Beachbody transformations. This Monday we started the 21 Day Fix Extreme. A year to the day! So here is a comparison of what I've lost in 1 year. But I've also gained...and what I've gained isn't shown by the scale or a measuring tape.

I've gained knowledge about nutrition:

  • You don't have to make a drastic change to make a difference. Try first going from white bread to wheat to whole grain, or even Ezekiel bread; or go from flavored chemical-laden regular yogurt to Greek yogurt to plain Greek yogurt with your own flavorings.
  • Generally, you should build your meal around a protein and use carbs sparingly. I used to begin every meal plan with a carb or always add bread/butter, biscuit, fries, etc. to every meal. Not any more!
  • The more healthy the food is, the larger space it should take up on your plate.
  • You can't really overeat on veggies or fruits.
  • What a proper portion looks like, and how many portions I need of what type of food each day.

I've gained confidence:

  • No one else's thoughts should dictate how I feel about myself.
  • If I don't love and accept my body, who will??
  • If I don't treat my body with respect for the amazing things it can do, how will my daughter learn to do that?
  • My mood should not depend on a number on the scale.

I've gained strength, energy, and muscle definition:

  • I have more energy than my daughter and can get up earlier in the day to get more done.
  • I can do things around the house without having to ask my husband when he gets home from work.
I could go on and on, but I'll stop here. If you'd like this type of transformation - inside and out - in your life, please reach out to me! I'd love to help you achieve this for yourself.

Strawberry Picking: a fun family activity centered on a healthy food

Have you ever been strawberry picking? We just went Saturday- it was the first time for any of us. We went to Getting's Garden, located outside of Sheldon, Iowa (http://gettingsgarden.com). It was so much fun. It's an amazing opportunity to teach my daughter where her food comes from and also make fun family memories.
I thought it was so cool how many strawberries were on each stem: big red ones next to tiny green ones, and a few flowers mixed in that haven't even started growing their strawberries. I love being in nature and seeing God's wonderful creation.
As my husband I were prepping some of our freshly picked strawberries for the freezer yesterday, I got to thinking: how do other people prep their strawberries? Growing up, my mom would just chop the top off to get the green off. I got a huller in grad school because I thought it was the most novel invention. In reality, you have to shove it in there, wiggle it around, and almost scrape it to the side as you lift it out in order to actually get the stem and leaves off. Who wants mushed strawberries and to do that much work just to get the stem off? We picked 2 flats worth of strawberries and I found that the stems came off super easy just pulling with my finger. Sometimes I used my thumbnail to get right at the base of it. My daughter Addison (3 years old) could even do it.
So I decided to try all 3 methods next to each other. What can I say...I needed some excitement in those oceans of strawberries. ;) One thing I am always conscious of is waste. I try not to waste or throw away anything unless absolutely necessary. Cutting the stem off leaves quite a bit of waste, the huller is a little better, but just pulling it off wastes no edible part of the strawberry at all! Not to mention that you don't need to use any tool but your own fingers! This is something your young child can do with you and you don't need to worry about knife safety or anything. We ended up prepping 47 cups worth of strawberries, so cutting the top off of each would generate a lot of waste! Pulling the stems off just left a heap of green.
Now I've got 47 pre-portioned bags of cut strawberries in my deep freezer to add to our Shakeology each morning. (To those who might think it's funny I am worried about waste but still used plastic bags...we reuse them MANY times before throwing them away. There are some conveniences I still use but it's not like I had any other way to store almost 50 cups of strawberries.)

So tell me:
Have you been strawberry picking?
How do you prep your strawberries?
I'd love to hear from you to see if this idea has occurred to you before!

21 Day Fix

Spring 2014
The 21 Day Fix changed my life- and I'm not exaggerating at all! I've always struggled with portions and not knowing how much was the "right" amount to eat. I sort of knew what was and wasn't healthy, but didn't know where to start. I wanted to make a change and needed structure, but nothing too drastic that had too many "off limits" foods- I am picky and NOT a fan of vegetables. I'm so grateful to my coach Toni for introducing me to the 21 Day Fix!
The 21 Day Fix made healthy eating so easy- there were lists of foods for each container and I found many things on each list that I already ate or was willing to try. And it's not so restrictive- there's "cheats" allowed too.  My husband and I enjoyed learning how to plan our meals (check out my coach's post on post-it meal planning here: http://tonihatinger.blogspot.com/2014/04/my-21-day-fix-meal-planning-made-easy.html?m=1) and found that the plan allowed us so much food- we definitely were not starving! But we were losing weight and inches super fast.

The 30 minute workouts were really challenging, but with each move only lasting a minute, we pushed through. My husband works full time and we worked out together before bed- our 2 year old daughter loved joining in too!

I loved that there was a different focus every day (legs, arms, cardio, pilates, cardio with weights, dirty 30, and yoga) so you weren't overworking the same muscle groups day after day.

Seeing immediate results was so gratifying and once our bodies got used to the right portions and eating clean, we were no longer craving junk food or processed stuff. Shakeology was a big reason for those decreased cravings too. Our deep fryer is now collecting dust- haha. Since the program is only 21 days long, it's so easy to stick with and stay committed. Over the last year, the portion control containers and meal planning has become our new lifestyle.
We continued with 3 rounds of the 21 Day Fix before moving on to another program.
